Photos from Spain

The true origins of the name España are disputed. The ancient Roman name Hispania may derive from Hesperia ('western land' or 'land of the setting sun') or from the Phoenician i-spn-ya ('the land where metals are forged'). Other suggested origins are the Punic word Ispanihad and the Basque word Ezpanna which both mean 'edge' or 'border', a reference to the fact that the Iberian peninsula constitutes the southwest of the European continent.
